The building now known as the Richard Rodgers Theatre was constructed by and named for American architect and real estate developer Irwin Chanin in 1925. In 1931, the famed Shuberts purchased the theatre and renamed it the 46th Street Theatre. In 1982, it was bought and renovated by the Nederlander Organization, which changed its name in 1990 to honor the great composer Richard Rodgers (The Sound of Music, The King and I, Pal Joey, Oklahoma!, Babes in Arms, South Pacific). The theatre is notable for having a "democratic" seating plan, in which all patrons enter through the same doors and those sitting in the mezzanine and balcony use steps located inside the house itself.
In its long history, the Richard Rodgers Theatre has been the home of an amazing number of Tony Award-winning productions. Best Musical winners include Guys and Dolls, Damn Yankees, Redhead, Nine, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, 1776, Raisin, and In the Heights. Best Play winners include Fences and Lost in Yonkers.
