The Brooklyn Nets were founded in 1967 -- but not as an NBA team. The New Jersey Americans were a member of the American Basketball Association (ABA), and were founded in 1967. Since then, the Nets have gone through various franchise changes. They were known as the New York Nets in the ABA up until 1976, then joined the NBA as the New York Nets for one season before becoming the New Jersey Nets in 1977. In 2012, the Nets moved once again from New Jersey, and this time settled in Brooklyn as the Brooklyn Nets.
The Nets have never been crowned NBA champions, but captured two ABA championships (1974, 1976) prior to joining the NBA. The Nets had back-to-back NBA Finals appearances in 2002 and 2003, but lost to two teams in the middle of dynasty-esque runs -- the Los Angeles Lakers and San Antonio Spurs. Since then, the Nets haven't made it past the Eastern Conference Semifinals, but Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov is intent on changing that -- sooner rather than later.
Now in Brooklyn, the Nets' rivalry with the New York Knicks is as real as ever, as the two New York-based teams compete to be top dogs of the Big Apple. Though the Knicks may receive more attention, the Nets have had more recent success than the Knicks, and also play in the brand new Barclay's Center, an arena nice enough to rival Madison Square Garden.
