About Billy Joel

The iconic piano rock star, Billy Joel, started playing music at the very young age of four. Who knew at that age sold out Billy Joel concerts would greet him on every stop. It's claimed that following the famous performance by the Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show he dropped out of high school to pursue a music career. By that point, Joel was a very talented musician and had been a member of three bands. While he may have been a talented musician, he was certainly not the rock star he envisioned himself to be. He left his hometown area of Long Island following a dismal release of his first album, Cold Spring Harbor, for Los Angeles where he performed in various lounges and bars. These experiences would soon give him the inspiration to write "Piano Man", which portrayed the piano performer as a shepherd for the downtrodden imbibers to better times. If you happened to catch a Billy Joel concert ticket then, you're probably still telling that story! Eventually, a recording of "Captain Jack" made its way to music executives at Columbia Records, who insisted Joel sign with them in 1973.

However, it would be the '80s and '90s that would fortify Joel's place in music's history. His albums Glass Houses, The Nylon Curtain, An Innocent Man, We Didn't Start the Fire, and River of Dreams would all be nominated for Grammys over the decades. All these nominations alluded to the awards that were to come for Joel. In 1991, he received a Grammy Legend award, followed by the Billboard Century Award in 1994 and an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999.

The meteoric rise was not without its pitfalls. He divorced supermodel wife, Christie Brinkley, in 1994 after nine years of marriage and through a variety of personal problems, developed an alcohol-abuse problem. His ex-wife and their 16-year-old daughter, Alexa, would later persuade him to receive help for his substance abuse problem in 2002 following a car accident in East Hampton, Connecticut. Divorces would not be his only setbacks. In 1989, Joel caught on to some shady activities regarding his finances and his ex-brother-in-law, Frank Weber. What ensued was a $90 million lawsuit that would also involve his own former attorney as well.
